8 Skills that Monetize – Learn These Skills to Make More Money

1 – Communications

Clear communications is integral to anyone’s success – may it be in speaking, presenting a deck, or even writing an email.

Communications may come easier and more natural for some, while others may have to work on it harder. But it doesn’t mean that it’s un-learnable.

Communications via written means – emails, letters and documents–requires you to have a good grasp of grammar and spelling. If you are doubtful, you can install Grammarly into your browser and it will help you immensely with vocabulary, spelling and even word suggestions!

Of course, there are many different writing forms and styles: creative, technical, academic, business writing etc., depending on your space. Reading a lot also improves your writing a lot. We learn by observing and then doing.

Public speaking is one of the most terrifying aspects of communication for many people. Do you know that more people have the fear of public speaking than of death?

The best way to overcome your fear of public speaking is to work on it. Even the billionaire investor Warren Buffett himself was terrified of speaking. But he was well-aware of his weakness and made active steps to improve that by reading Dale Carnegie’s book “How to Win Friends and Influence People” and later enrolled in his course. Warren later said taking this course is one of the best investment decisions of his life.

I recommend you to also read the book by Carnegie. “How to Win Friends and Influence People” is an interesting, concise and easy read on communications and soft skills.

Toastmasters is a fantastic group that helps you improve your public speaking. Toastmaster groups are available all over the world, find your local chapter and join in to help you master confidence and clear communications in speaking.

Project management, as well as organizational skills, are vital to any group, company or organization.

Many people have great ideas, but few people can actually implement it from start to finish. People who can lead projects, organize people efficiently, and handle multiple tasks, are highly valued.

4 – Sales

Sales is the foundation of all businesses–whatever industry you are in, whether you are rank-and-file or in upper management, sales skills are always, always relevant.

You are trying to convince other people your point. To be able to sell something effectively provides you a huge competitive advantage from the rest.

3 – Storytelling

The trending keyword of the last five years is not related to AI or technology. The main focus of everyone as of late is ‘Storytelling!’

You will see that many TED Talk speakers use storytelling techniques to create effective talks. It’s an important skill for you to learn to instantly earn more money, as well.

Storytelling is a vital skill that will help you greatly in life. An effective storyteller is instantly more likeable and charismatic. Storytelling helps deliver a compelling and memorable message. It helps you connect better with your audience. Storytelling can even help you generate more leads or sales.

Storytelling is not just public speaking. In order to do oral storytelling effectively, you need to make use of a whole range of tools: voice and accents, silence, body and hand language, expressions, movement and space.

Sometimes, visual design speak louder than words. I learned that to get your point across, some graphic design skills may be important.

Graphic Design Skills make a profitable side hustle, and can even pave the way to a full-time career. There are limitless ways for you to make money with design: taking graphic design projects, selling printables on Etsy, providing design templates, and creating website and blog graphics. The skill to use design software such as the Adobe Creative Suite will make you stand out among the rest.

8 – Negotiations

Many people are too shy to communicate their concerns and negotiate their needs, especially Filipinos. Maybe it’s because of our timid nature, but it is difficult for us to communicate our terms.

The art of negotiation, and to be able to negotiate well, will net you many benefits. Everyday, we deal with negotiations–with clients, vendors, your boss, your partner. Being able to advocate the best outcome for your position–or even better, to create a win-win situation for both parties, will open a lot of doors for you.
